Mark Nemesis: The Avatar
Mark Mannix is a Warlock. A wielder of magic, who has the potential to become the most powerful sorcerer on the planet. If he should live so long.
An aspiring twenty-three year old artist, Mark has enrolled in the University of the Arts but soon decides that there's an easier way to fame and fortune. Utilize his ability to alter probabilities and matter to entertain the masses. Of course, Mark's parents are strongly against the idea. For all intent and purposes, the world has largely forgotten about the existence of magic and other creatures of the night. Mark's mother, a witch herself, would like very much to keep it that way. Having disassociated herself from her kind and retreating within the confines of upper middle class suburbia, Mrs. Mannix is content for her family to live reasonably normal lives. Mark's father is in complete agreement and forbids Mark and his sister Nadia from ever using their powers. Unlike Mark, Nadia who is one year younger is content with this arrangement.
But there are other forces at work. Francis Austin, grandmother to Mark and Nadia, and a one hundred and twenty year old master mage in her own right has others plans. Mrs. Austin is an agent of a secret society of witches called the Enclave of the Seven. A society that has survived the fall of Atlantis and almost a thousand years of persecution thereafter. Egyptian Mystics, Druids, Haitian witch doctors, Salem witches, American Indian shamans, all of these disciplines plus countless more throughout the ages have been influenced by the edicts of the Enclave. This secret society has predicted that after the turn of the millennium a new age of sorcery merged with technology would signal a new era upon the earth. An era with the Enclave the rightful rulers of the planet. It is preordained that a master warlock would be found and that he would lead them to this new golden era. The leaders of this sect believe that Mark is the mage in question. There is also cause for great concern within the ranks of the Enclave, for it has also been preordained that this master sorcerer would endure several trials of incredible hardship. The last of which would involve the fate of the planet itself.
And then there's the Project Premonition.
By the mid -seventies the United States had entered a new arms race. A clandestine initiative unknown to the American public. New weapons were being groomed with the potential to equal the destructive power of a nuclear bomb. These weapons came in a decidedly human form. Paranormals, men and women with superhuman qualities were emerging throughout the globe. And unlike the bomb, America did not have a monopoly on this new dangerous resource. Quite the opposite in fact. Third world nations had the highest instances of paranormal development. Fearing that paranormal terrorism would one day strike on American soil, the C.I.A. was directed to create a task force for the investigation and the recruitment of paranormals. The task force was entitled Project Premonition with most of it's paranormal agents consisting of ESPERs in origin. Ultimately, the project's mandate was broadened to the elimination of paranormals deemed a threat to national security. Thinking that Mark is a telekinetic of the highest order the project intends to recruit him. Either that or terminate him.
And lastly, there is the daemon Maelstrom.
Monster from a mirror universe? Fallen angel? Cursed savior from an alternate dimension? Very few of Earth’s inhabitants know his true origins.
And the one’s who do know are too frightened to talk about it. What is known is that he is coming to Earthand soon. Maelstrom cares little about the secret international parlaying of paranormal operatives from various countries vying for political dominance and security. He simply wants to destroy the world. And the Enclave of the Seven could very well be the ones responsible for leading him here…
